La Crosse Promise is approaching the third anniversary of the launch of a neighborhood program that is transforming the south side of La Crosse.
Twelve new Promise homes, now occupied by families and individuals who will receive Promise scholarships, have replaced either condemned or irreparable homes in the Powell-Poage-Hamilton and the Washburn neighborhoods which were in decline.
The City of La Crosse purchases these properties and either clears the existing structure and lists the lot or sells the property as-is. Builders or homebuyers can apply for grants from the County for acquisition and demolition costs for these properties. Private homebuyers may also purchase any home or lot in those neighborhoods and build or renovate a home and become eligible for the scholarship. READ MORE
